Your teeth operate like a shelf of books. Each one presses up against the next, helping keep them all in place.
What happens when you remove a tooth from the arch? The same thing that happens when you yank a book out of a tightly packed shelf. While the books may all shift and slide right away, teeth take a bit longer, but the result is the same.
A missing tooth causes other remaining ones to drift toward the open space, disrupting alignment.
Here is what happens when you have an untreated gap, and what you can do about it.
1. Side Teeth Tilt Sideways
Without a neighbor holding them upright, teeth will start leaning into the space. They may tilt and shift, creating tight angles that trap food. Beyond the visual disruption, tilting teeth can increase the risk of cavities. Food and plaque may get stuck in the tight spaces they create, heightening the chance of decay.
2. Top or Bottom Teeth Drift Vertically
When you have all of your teeth, each bottom tooth has one directly above it, and vice versa. When you bite, the top and bottom partner teeth touch. However, when you lose a tooth, one loses its chewing partner. Without anything blocking it, the tooth will gradually drift out of its socket, which can expose sensitive roots.
3. Uneven Biting Causes Muscle Fatigue
As teeth lean and shift out of position, they also disrupt how your upper and lower jaws meet. Altering your bite makes eating more challenging for your jaw joint and cheek muscles. You may experience bruxism, tension headaches, and jaw tightness.
